okay, this is an idea that Bob approached me with, and it is thus: extending the deadline of the banter 500 until after new years eve of this year.
the reasons for this is thus:
the banter 500 is flippin huge. and while the idea is that it would be a race against time, i think most of us are struggling to actually get any free time / money to do stuff. it would be crap that if at the end, most of the challenges were not even completed. some of them are amazing as well, and even if i dont complete them, i'd like to see someone try them eg become a hospital radio DJ. there are some things i would like to do, regardless of when the deadline is. and of course i would like some medium to share it with the world. an option is to keep doing some of the challenges after the deadline, but it just wouldnt be the same, plus it would be difficult to keep the final scores, yet still add new stuff. we'd love for the site to be as full as possible by the end, and this may not happen the way things are going. i have the site until august 2007, and it wouldnt be difficult to get that extended.
things are also starting to pick up as well, as more and more people are starting to hear of the site. an extension could mean more people could come on board for support. or it could just fizzle up and die. we had planned to contact the media after the america trips, to show them that we are actually serious. an extension could mean more media coverage, rather than just a potential 2 or 3 months.
finally, the banter 500 is a great source of youth work. if i was starting a new job once i finish in moira, i would like any kids at a new church to enjoy the same experience.
obviously we need the panel's opinion on this, but if anyone else has an opinion feel free to share it. we are not saying this is a definite thing, or that there isn't any problems associated with it (especially when people like AK have made a big effort to get things done before the new years eve deadline), but it is an option that people may like to consider. you never know - the extension may even give lee time to get a camera, and start doing some catching up.
if an extension was to happen, how long would people like to do extend it for? a year, a couple more months?

Yeah, the more banter the better. Keep it going for an extra year or so - not indefinateley, otherwise the whole points thing becomes a tad pointless

Maybe not as much as a year because you might start to lose interest....but if you don't think you do (and if you get serious media coverage, i doubt that you will) then go for it. Definitely another six months...otherwise it would have been a game that just came and went when it could be a legendary experience.

A year sounds good to me. Personally speaking I don't think I would ever get bored, and in reality if the four of us were the only people to visit the site i would still be up for it. Also after another year the site would be unbelievable, and we may even be able to almost complete all the challenges. woo hoo!

I was starting to get genuinely worried that I'd be in California over New Years for the ceremony, an extension would allow all kinds of pacific banter without the shame of missing the graduation from the school of hard banter. I think that, as above, not indefinitely but maybe a provisional summer equinox 2007 completion date might give you a bit more of a long view to this. Means you can do some medical research and get funds up. This is definitely a good idea.

the extension is not a definite thing. this topic is here merely to discuss it. there is no point extending it if everyone is not happy about it. there is also no point extending it if noone is interested. thats why the panel need to get together and discuss it, as it may not happen. this topic is here for people to discuss it, but ultimately it will fall into the hands of the panel.
everyone has gone to great lengths and money in order to get things done this year. and while people are planning to go away, realistically, is there any other time we could do these things other than this summer? AK will be in final year, Bob could be in China, and i could be in full time employment (eugh), possibly in another country. regardless of a deadline extension, personally, this summer would be the only time i could get away to do stuff. regardless of a deadline extension, people would still get into money problems (i'm not even getting paid much this year, and really can't afford to do some of the things that i really want to). even if there was an extension, AK would still have the edge, as he will have got some of the major ones out of the way. he has been working his butt off at the superbowl, and the like the rest of us, we have all been busy. the reason for the proposed extension is to increase the amount of banter that goes on, not because it will give us a better chance of winning. it would be rubbish to finish the banter 500 with very few of the challenges being completed. remember that an extension decreases the chances of all of us for winning - the winner is going to be the one with the most motivation, not the one with the most time or money. though that will certainly help.
there are, however, other possibilities to extend the banter 500. here are some:
a) have the overall winner at the end of this year. we could then start a new points score ie from zero, and have another year to do the challenges that havent been done, so that we have another winner at the end of that year. eg the trophy could be handed over to the new winner, or a new trophy bought for them; new challenges could be devised for this. ie we could run a yearly banter 500.
b) after this year, keep the site going, with the aim of being the first person to complete 500 challenges. we could make it that you have to do a certain number from each category, so that you can't just win by doing loads of easy ones.
what about those ideas?

I definitely think that doing it for another year is the thing to do, with an absolute set in stone finishing date. It will be AK's final year, but after his escapades this summer I doubt if he'll have much travelling planned anyway. And taking a few hours out to bake a cake or have a picnic on a roundabout is only going to help his studies.
I'm sure that after the summer the website will be amazing enough to attract some sort of media attention. Anyway it feels like we're only really getting started.
It will also give me the time and money to do that bull run thing in Italy.

yeah i still have plans to do a few things like the bull run or the tomato thingy would be cool too, i wouldn't ming an extension but lets not forget the plan was always to end it after this year i think we need to see after the summer when theres more big ones done on the site if there is any media interest and take it from there, don't worry about team Ak i will be keeping up the international travel thats a big part of the banter 500 and the whole reason were doing this is that its an excuse to do things we always wanted to do but could never justify doing. oh and guys i found how to get your face on the shaftsburry square big TV but it costs a fortune so i was thinking of a group thing to spread the cost and we all get the points and the publicity for the site!
